Case Study 4

My Life My Phone

Design, Marketing and Engineering teams wanted to know how Windows Phone was received by real users in real life situations compared to other phones in the market…but the market share of Windows Phone was so small, it was hard to find people who used the phones.

My Life My Phone was a joint project that involved the entire research team

Methodology: Longitudinal study with participants who agreed to evaluate different phones for 2 month periods

My role:
-develop methods and instruments for collecting both in time feedback and overall satisfaction
-lead interviews for 4 of 16 participants

Primary Research Question

If people just gave Windows Phone a chance, would they choose it over the competition?

Additional Questions

Feature Specific Questions

  • What are the tasks users currently do on the phone?
  • What tasks are they still doing on other devices?
  • Which activities are the high/low points for users?
  • Would they recommend Windows Phones to others?
  • How do the different map experiences compare across platforms?
  • When are people using maps and directions on their phone?

Plan

Give people an upgraded phone to use for 2 months (either Windows Phone, Android or iPhone)
-Have them switch phones after another 2 months
-Use a variety of methods to collect different types of information
 -Compare their experiences

Overcoming Obstacles

Problem

Solution

Market share of Windows Phone was so small it was hard to find customers to participate

Seed people with Windows Phone to get insights on experience

Tools had to be compatible on all 3 platforms (WP, Android, iPhone)

Find tools that had apps on all three platforms and make them work

Multiple researchers would be collecting and synthesizing data used to make comparisons

Created comprehensive guides and data collection tools BEFORE visits to ensure standardized data collection

-Let us collect in moment feedback with screenshots
-Resulted in artifacts for team to reference during planning

Artifacts & Sharing

The study led to the creation of unique artifacts for collecting feedback and sharing insights

Insights

With the use of the smartphone, people are doing more tasks (especially around traveling) in the moment rather than in advance.

Steve J said things he used to do in preparation for business trips, he is now doing as needed on the road.

Maps are used intermittently and in the context of real time

Ashley was trying to find a dance center and wasn’t finding what she needed on the web.  There are lots of Dance Performance Centers so she didn’t know which one she was looking for.  So she went to maps to find the contact info for the one in Monroe.

Impact

-Identified barriers to using Windows Phone including lack of apps
-Collected many new insights that were used for new features
-Teams felt more empathy for our users
-We were able to collect stories that supported the things we needed to fix in the next release
