Case Study 2

Joule App Autostart

About the Study

Notifications were a pain point

Multi stage study focusing on notifications
Phase 1: Reviewed feedback in App Store, Google  Play, Amazon
Phase 2: Interviews with users from ZenDesk tickets
Phase 3: Iterative studies on usertesting
Phase 4: Beta Phase 2 revealed part of the issue was people  were adding their food before preheat and  forgetting to start a timer

Feedback Review

Interviews

Pam contacted support because an hour went by before  she remembered to the put the timer on. She was making  chicken breasts. And she put her food all in and started the  Joule. Unless she is making something that needs to be  watched closely like eggs or fish, she will usually just put the  food in before the water is heated. She got busy and after  about an hour or so she suddenly remembered that the  chicken had been in for awhile but she never set the timer.  She went in and set the timer but then had to make sure  that she subtracted an hour from when it said it would be  ready.

Molly was making pork belly. She put it in and got it started  and then didn’t check on it for probably 18 hours. And then  somewhere between 18 and 20 hours she decided to look  to see how much time was left because she didn’t  remember exactly when she put it in the day before. She  was making ramen and wanted to know about when she  needed to get the other things ready. Once she puts things  in, she doesn’t religiously check it. She just checks it when  she gets close to preparing her meal. When she looked at  the screen, it just said the joule was at temp.

Iterative Studies

Beta

  • Gave a beta flag to 150 people on our panel
  • Set metrics for success
  • Collected qualitative feedback  through surveys and quantitative feedback through telemetry
  • Qualitative feedback came back positive but several people said they didn’t get their notifications
  • Measurements during beta exposed a problem with  notification architecture that was fixed before rolling out to whole audience

Insights

The feature was well received though  some wanted more info about when the water had heated

“It is very helpful! I  usually forget to start  the timer on my own  because I usually put  the food in while it’s  still heating”

“I wish there was still a  notification that the water was heated &  timer was starting so that I knew when to expect my food to be  ready.”

Impact

  • Revealed underlying issue for some notification problems
  • Helped team develop a beta plan that included measuring success of the feature
  • Measurements during beta exposed a problem with underlying architecture that was fixed before rolling out to whole audience
